Description

Overview
APR ignition coils are designed to be a direct plug-and-play upgrade to the factory coils and provide greater power output, ensuring a stronger and more consistent spark. It is generally believed that the common replacement of factory ignition coils with the higher-output Audi R8 coils provides greater power output. However, tests prove that they are no more powerful than the factory coils found on other engines. APR ignition coils increase power output by up to 6% over stock. They are a direct upgrade or replacement, and come with a unique red housing!

How does APR improve factory ignition coils?

We prioritize performance. Our ignition coils are designed to maximize efficiency by increasing the diameter of the copper windings, reducing resistance while maintaining the turns necessary to maintain optimal voltage levels. We improve the size and strength of the neodymium magnets, all within the physical constraints of the coil design. In addition, we improved the silicon steel shield, which helps reduce energy loss and improve flux on pencil-style coils. Voltage regulation is meticulously controlled by a series of Zener diodes, allowing for precise management of resistance and primary inductance. Primary inductance is crucial because it determines how much charge the coil can store before firing, but it must be balanced to ensure proper operation across the entire operating rpm range. This engineering approach results in an ignition coil with increased energy production, delivering a more powerful spark that promotes cleaner, more complete fuel combustion.

Why don't factory coils have these upgrades?

Automakers must constantly balance cost-effectiveness and performance across every component of a vehicle. Ignition coils are no exception, with millions produced each year. Even the smallest cost reductions can have a significant impact on overall costs. Typically, manufacturers reduce costs by using smaller, less powerful neodymium magnets, thinner copper windings, and reduced shielding material.

How are APR ignition coils tested?

To ensure that each batch of ignition coils meets our rigorous quality standards, we conduct extensive testing on randomly selected samples. The coils are tested on our specialized test bench for 73 hours, which represents over 15 coil firings! All testing is performed in an open-circuit configuration to ensure energy flows through the coil to expose any weaknesses in the windings and potting material, which would cause the coil to short out and overheat. Only after successfully passing our rigorous testing are batches of coils approved for sale.
