Filtration, airflow, and heat are the main considerations when designing a new air intake system for a turbocharged engine.

Our do88 air intake system was developed to provide the turbocharger with good filtration, an improved airflow path, and low intake temperatures. A design challenge for this B58 Generation 2 intake system is its location; it's right next to the exhaust manifold, which quickly overheats this position in the engine compartment.

High intake air temperatures are detrimental to engine performance because the turbocharger has to build pressure with hot, less dense air. Therefore, a completely sealed intake system is the only way to ensure that intake air temperatures (IATs) are kept to a minimum. However, a fully sealed system presents a challenge because it results in a restriction with only a stock air intake at the bottom of the air filter housing to draw in air. During development, we realized that the system needed a secondary air intake to eliminate this restriction. Our sealed housing also features a heat shield to minimize radiative heat transfer from the exhaust manifold. To ensure sufficient airflow around the filter, we designed a large 7″ housing that also allows room for suspension braces.

As a replacement for the original air intake pipe, we designed a larger, smoother carbon fiber tube. It starts with a 105mm (4,1 inch) diameter and tapers seamlessly to fit the turbo inlet pipe. Attached to the intake tube is our large, custom-designed air filter. The filter features a densely woven cotton gauze for superior filtration. It is, of course, washable and reusable for optimal performance and a long service life.

The system is available in several configurations. It's compatible with OE turbo inlet piping – but also with do88's CNC-machined turbo inlets. Our turbo inlets are available in two different versions, for the OE turbo or the Pure 800 hybrid turbo. Both have a massive 89mm (3,5″) hose connection to the inlet piping and feature a carefully calculated flow-optimized radius that significantly improves airflow. Adding do88's turbo inlet piping effectively eliminates any bottlenecks before the turbo to prevent overboost, even at high power levels!

Tests conducted on our SF-1020 SuperFlow test bench clearly demonstrate the importance of this optional turbo inlet pipe. The intake system alone provides a significant 15% increase in airflow. Combined with the do88 turbo inlet pipe (for OE Turbo), the overall increase in airflow reaches an impressive 23%! We highly recommend this combination.

The original air filter box and turbo inlet piping are designed with elements that minimize turbo and intake noise. Specifically, the original air intake piping includes two silencers to ensure quiet turbo operation. In contrast, our intake system lacks these noise-reducing elements, resulting in a more audible turbo whistle and intake noise.

The kit is available in three versions, depending on the turbo application:

Without the do88 turbo inlet pipe. The intake system connects to the OE plastic turbo inlet pipe.
With CNC machined do88* turbo inlet piping designed for OE turbo. NOTE read*.
With the CNC machined do88* turbo inlet pipe designed for the Pure 800 turbo. NOTE read*.
* The do88 turbo inlet piping does not incorporate a crankcase heater element, meaning the car's wiring connector will be disconnected. We recommend a custom modification to avoid the CEL (Check Engine Light).
