Because the exhaust is closer to the CV joint boots, this excessive heat leads to premature cracking and failure of the original rubber boots. Over time, this can cause grease leaks, wear on the CV joints, and ultimately, transmission problems, especially during spirited driving on a track.

"Intensive track use leads to high temperatures in the rear output shaft boots on the axle side of the G80, G81, G82, G83 and G87 models, as well as their Competition versions. If damage to the boots indicates this cause of failure, it is also possible to install the more temperature-resistant rear output shafts from the special G80CS, G82CS and G82CSL models in the workshop."
